Invocation for the Beginning of a Gathering

By the grace of countless beings we are here,
thank you
by the grace of this heavy planet, we are here,
by the grace of sunlight warming everything,
by the grace of mystery beyond all we can know,
we are here, thank you.
By the grace of a lineage we can only glimpse
we are here,
by the grace of the kind and brave people who came before us
we are here,
people who sang to make each other happy,
who tried again and again to serve life and to love,
by their grace we are here, thank you.
By the grace of wind and rain we are here,
winds through the fields of Iowa, rain squalls in Wisconsin,
thank you
by the grace of rivers, by the grace of clouds,
by the grace of plants pushing up through the soil
we are here, we are here, thank you.
By the grace of engines and metal we are here,
schedules and clocks, gas and coal,
by the grace of pollution we are here,
spewing from the tailpipes of our transportation,
by their grace we are here, thank you.
We are here in the common prayer
that our people have been praying for lifetimes:
that our hearts may be open,
free from judgments, radiant with love.
We pray for the courage to stand in the truth as we see it.
We pray for the well-being of all life.
We pray for a beautiful world for our children.
May our prayer be embodied through action,
may our actions be true to our prayer.
May we be kind to one another,
May we be kind to all beings and places,
may we be kind to ourselves
and savor this day
as only we can savor it, being here,
by the grace of countless beings, thank you.
